PAWS NY Receives Pivotal Two-Year Grant From Amie’s Place Foundation
New York, NY, December 30, 2011 – Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS NY) today announces that Amie’s Place Foundation has awarded them a game-changing two-year Grant of $150,000. This new partnership will allow PAWS NY to make the transition from an all-volunteer management group to a professionally funded and managed nonprofit organization. This Grant will be used to hire PAWS NY’s founder, Rachel Herman, as its first full-time staff person. Ms. Herman will assume responsibilities as Executive Director starting January 5, 2012. With her full-time leadership and support from the Grant, PAWS NY will significantly expand its cornerstone Housecall Program.

Through the Housecall Program, dedicated volunteers visit New York City residents facing both physical and financial hardships. By providing simple pet care assistance, such as dog walking, provision of food and water, litter box maintenance, and transportation to and from veterinary appointments, PAWS NY ensures its clients will keep their pets and continue to benefit from the human-animal bond. When asked about PAWS NY’s service, client Arnold J. explains, “It really means a lot to me…I’m not able to take [my dog] out every day…PAWS really came along at the right time and helped me a lot.” Arnold’s volunteer Linda adds, “I would never want to imagine any situation that would bring these two apart. I’m just really thrilled to be a part of something that allows them to stay together and stay a family.” Thanks to this extraordinary support and recognition from Amie’s Place Foundation, PAWS NY can fulfill its mission to help people by helping pets.

New York, NY, July 2010 – Citymeals-on-Wheels and PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) NY have announced a new partnership to provide the homebound elderly with much-needed pet care assistance. The partnership will help Citymeals recipients by providing pet care products and trained volunteers who will help with daily tasks like walking, feeding and grooming.

Marcia Stein, executive director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, said, “So many of our homebound neighbors are all alone in the world but for the companionship of a pet who provides unconditional love. In fact, a survey done by Citymeals showed 73% of our meal recipients live alone – often their only human contact is their meal deliverer. We have found many Citymeals’ recipients struggle just to care for themselves. Walking a dog, feeding a cat, cleaning a bird cage are difficult, and sometimes expensive tasks for them. This new initiative with PAWS NY will make sure the loving partnership between our meal recipients and their pets remains intact.”

Citymeals-on-Wheels will provide volunteers to match with the homebound elderly. PAWS NY, in turn, will then provide these volunteers with pet-care training. PAWS NY, which relies on donations, is establishing a pet pantry in cooperation with Citymeals to provide pet food and supplies to seniors who are struggling to feed and care for their pets. Citymeals/PAWS NY volunteers will be able to provide services such as dog walking, cat litter maintenance, and pet feeding. The partnership will initially focus on serving homebound elderly on New York’s Lower East Side, an area with a large population of low-income, immigrant, and elderly residents.

Rachel Herman, President of PAWS NY said, “The relationship between pets and their owners is one of great joy—especially for someone who is older and may not have the same kind of social life they once had. Our work will allow this important relationship to continue while ensuring these pets are well cared for.”

PAWS NY, a grassroots organization established in New York City in 2008, has been training volunteers to provide one-on-one pet care assistance to needy individuals, including senior citizens. By offering these services, vulnerable pet owners are able to keep their pets and continue to experience the proven physical and psychological benefits of animal companionship while the number of pets surrendered to already overcrowded New York City animal shelters is reduced.

Over at Fetchdog.com, Julia Szabo posted about recent scientific proof that dogs really do contribute to people’s overall health and well being. According to her, “A recent study analyzing the brain waves of dog owners found that proximity to their pets had a calming effect, significantly reducing their levels of the stress hormone cortisol.” Even better, people showed the same stress relaxation response regardless of whether or not the dog was familiar to them.

So, if you volunteer to walk a dog for a PAWS NY client, not only will you be helping a fellow human and a canine, you’ll be lowering your own stress! Great news for everyone.

Baking for Good is a company that takes the idea of an old-fashioned bake sale to a whole new level, donating 15% of all sales to a participating nonprofit of the consumer’s choice (that’s you!). Not only is this a terrific idea, but they use the finest ingredients that are all-natural, organic, local, and seasonal. All of their baked goods are delicious (and they even have vegan and gluten free options). We can’t wait to order more of them! Please visit their website and order treats for your office, your friend’s birthday, father’s day, graduation, or for yourself (you deserve it)! Make sure to select PAWS NY as the cause you’d like to support when you place your order. Bon appetit!

The PUPP Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we have officially changed our name to PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support). This change reflects a partnership with PAWS San Francisco, an organization that has been providing services to pets and their people for 24 years. PAWS SF senior staff have been mentors to us since our founding. We thank them for their support, and are honored to create a more formal partnership for the future. There are two people at PAWS SF we would particularly like to thank: John Lipp, President and CEO, and Andrea Brooks, Director of Education and Client Advocacy.

Our name may be changing, but our mission remains the same: to help people care for their pets when physical, financial and other barriers prevent them from providing adequate care on their own. We are helping people by helping pets!
