Research
In 2023, 48.5 million people in the US met the criteria for having a Substance Use Disorder and 54.2 million people needed treatment. In NYC, there were 2.8 million people living with a substance use disorder in the last year.
Pets can help individuals in recovery stay sober. Research shows that pets assist individuals in recovery by:
- Providing therapeutic empathy
- Providing connections that can assist in socialization
- Serving as “family” in the absence of human family members
- Supporting self-efficacy
- Strengthening a sense of empowerment
Impact
In the first year of this program, PAWS NY coordinated approximately 50 foster homes for people and pets in need for a total of more than 1,000 days of foster care.
