Tell us a little about yourself!
Hi! I’m Diana, and I live on the Upper West Side with my husband, Michael, and our dog, Cooper. We love spending time outdoors, traveling, and, of course, caring for animals. Fostering has become something we truly enjoy doing together, and it’s been an incredibly meaningful way to give back to our community.
What inspired you to become a PAWS NY foster volunteer?
What really inspired me was PAWS NY’s mission of keeping people and their pets together during difficult times. Pets are family, and no one should have to choose between getting the care they need and knowing their beloved companion is safe. Fostering allows us to help both the pet and the person, and that’s something that feels incredibly special.
What’s been your favorite foster memory so far?
My favorite part has been watching our foster settle in and slowly come out of her shell. Seeing her go from being unsure of her surroundings to feeling comfortable, relaxed, and showing her personality has been so rewarding. Those little milestones remind you how much consistency, patience, and love can make a difference.
What’s something that has surprised you about fostering?
I was surprised by how much fostering has taught me. Every animal is different, and the experience has made me more patient, more adaptable, and even more appreciative of the bond people share with their pets. It’s amazing how much joy a foster animal can bring into your home, even when you know they’re only with you for a short time.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a foster?
Knowing that we’re helping someone keep their family together. When a pet has a safe place to stay while their person focuses on their health or recovery, it provides peace of mind during an incredibly stressful time. Being able to play even a small role in that is deeply rewarding.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking about becoming a foster?
Do it! You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be willing to open your home and your heart. PAWS NY provides support throughout the process, and the difference you make for both an animal and their person is truly priceless. Fostering is one of the most meaningful ways to give back.
