Substance Use Recovery Program

Started in 2023 to honor the memory of Susan Sydney Weiss, this program provides foster and emergency care for pets as their guardians seek inpatient treatment for substance use.

It is specific to lower-income individuals who are unable to establish care for their pets in their absence. Our network of committed and vetted volunteers are eager to open their homes for temporary foster care.

“Thank you so much for all that you have done to help me on my recovery journey. It’s been quite a long time since things have been this quiet in my life, and Midnight and I are extremely grateful.”

Research

In 2023, 48.5 million people in the US met the criteria for having a Substance Use Disorder and 54.2 million people needed treatment. In NYC, there were 2.8 million people living with a substance use disorder in the last year.

Pets can help individuals in recovery stay sober. Research shows that pets assist individuals in recovery by:

  • Providing therapeutic empathy
  • Providing connections that can assist in socialization
  • Serving as “family” in the absence of human family members
  • Supporting self-efficacy
  • Strengthening a sense of empowerment

Impact

In the first year of this program, PAWS NY coordinated approximately 50 foster homes for people and pets in need for a total of more than 1,000 days of foster care.
