Runner Spotlight: Jamal

Today’s Runner Spotlight is Jamal Seriki, who will be running the 2026 NYC Half Marathon in March. Jamal has been volunteering for PAWS since September 2025. He loves helping animals in need, and he’s extremely excited to fundraise for PAWS NY and support our mission.
Read more about Jamal in his Q&A below!
Do you have any pets of your own? Did you grow up with pets? Tell us about them!
I unfortunately don’t personally have any pets in NYC, but my family in Texas has two cats currently (plus I grew up in a dog household). There has been Amanda the Lhasa Apso, Pluto (unclear what breed he was), and Rocky the Maltipoo. They all had very different personalities – Amanda was extremely laid back, Pluto was very curious, and Rocky was super smart. I also did have a pet goat named Fuzzy for some time, which was the coolest experience ever as a 6 year old!
What is your connection to PAWS NY? Why is this cause important to you?
I’m a volunteer for PAWS NY. The cause is important to me because I love how it prioritizes the importance of supporting the members of your community – both humans and animals.
Why did you decide to run the 2024 Marathon? Have you participated in long races in the past?
I just wanted to try challenge myself – I have never raced and am extremely new to running.
What do you do in your free time (besides run)?
I love watching soccer, boxing, skating, playing solitaire, and listening to music.
We’re so excited to cheer you on as you run Jamal! Click here to donate to Jamal’s fundraising page or to support the team overall.
