She joined PAWS NY last month as our Foster Administrator and will help manage our ever-growing foster and emergency care program.

Growing up in NYC, Adrianna has always been passionate about helping animals and worked at the ASPCA for many years. She is now working towards a master’s degree in veterinary social work, and two years ago, she rescued a petite pit bull named Pringlez.

Learn more about Adrianna and her favorite things to do in the city by reading her Q&A, and let’s welcome her to the team!

What has your career been like leading up to PAWS NY? In addition to this part-time role, what else do you do?

I began working with shelter animals when I was just 15 years old. From there, I worked across different sectors of animal welfare and ended up at the ASPCA for the past eight years. I also trained as a victim advocate and crisis counselor for New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Victim Intervention Program. I am currently entering my second year of graduate school at the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s online program, where I am working towards a master’s degree in veterinary social work.

What about this position and organization attracted you? Why are you excited to be on the team?

I have always been passionate about addressing the systems that prevent people from being unable to care for themselves and their pets. For years I’ve witnessed what people are willing to do to secure the safety of their pets, and I want to help break down the barriers that inhibit them from doing so. PAWS NY does just that! They are such a brilliant organization that makes a powerful impact on NYC’s most vulnerable communities. I love their mission and connect deeply with their core values. I am honored to be a part of this fantastic team, tiny but mighty!

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

My dad is allergic to cats and dogs, so growing up I had rabbits, and they were all lovely companions. We had Baby, a Dutch mix bun that loved to lick toes and eat dandelions, for 11 wonderful years. I even got a tattoo to commemorate her. After moving into a new place to live alone for the first time two years ago, I met the current light of my life, a petite pit bull named Pringlez. She came into the ASPCA as a cruelty case, emaciated and suffering from a traumatic brain injury from unknown trauma. Despite this, she smiled at us with her tail wagging. I instantly fell in love and officially adopted her on May 9, 2021.

Did you grow up in NYC? If not, when did you move here? Where do you live now?

I was born in Florida but came to New York to start preschool, so I consider myself a New Yorker. I grew up in the Bronx, lived in East Harlem for a bit, and now currently live in Brooklyn.

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

One thing I love NYC for is being the fashion hub of the world. It is impossible for me to walk past any thrift store without running inside. Shopping is one of my favorite things to do and I don’t think there’s a better place to do it than here.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

I must be honest when I say that my pit bull, Pringlez, is my entire personality. Any free time I have I am spending it at home, just staring at her in all her glory. Since we live only a block away from Brighton Beach, we also like to go for walks on the beach together and chase the seagulls. I also love to spend time with my partner and friends. You can usually catch us bowling, eating sweet treats, or singing karaoke.

What has your career been like leading up to PAWS NY? In addition to this part-time role, what else do you do?

My career leading up to PAWS NY has been an array of roles that have all centered around serving community, and hopefully making their lives better in some way! I am currently working part-time in the Spring cohort of analysts at Centri Tech, a foundation that works to address digital inclusion.

What about this position and organization attracted you? Why are you excited to be on the team?

As someone who has a deep love for animals, I was touched to learn about PAWS NY’s mission. Pets are our families and lifelines, and I’m excited to be contributing to work that keeps them in their home!

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I was lucky to grow up with a very bratty corgi, two kitties, tons of fish, and a hamster. Sadly, I recently lost my 22-year-old kitty named Chiruza, but I am grateful for the time we spent enriching each other’s lives! She was the cuddliest and the best.

Did you grow up in NYC? If not, when did you move here? Where do you live now?

I grew up in Riverdale, in the Bronx! Since then, I’ve lived in Brooklyn, Chinatown, Harlem, and now Inwood.

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

Honestly, I love everything about living in NYC! I love that we have so much culture and excitement at our fingertips. I especially love those days where you have no set plans and end up on a day-long adventure to a faraway borough or discovering something new in your very own neighborhood.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to do all things creative! I love to dance, sing, write, draw—really anything that gets those creative wheels turning!

She is currently working towards earning her M.S. in Nonprofit Management from Columbia University and has experience working with several nonprofit organizations, including The Chapin School.

Currently living in New Jersey, Simone grew up with lots of pets, including dogs, cats, and frogs, and she loves crocheting, reading mystery novels, and listening to True Crime podcasts. Read her full Q&A below and welcome Simone to the team!

What were you doing before joining PAWS NY?

Prior to joining PAWS NY, I was in the process (and still am until 2023) of getting an M.S. in Nonprofit Management. As a result, I was searching for a career that best aligned with my future master’s degree. Additionally, I had prior work experience in the nonprofit sector as working as the Campaign Coordinator for The Chapin School.

What about this position and organization attracted you?

As someone who had previously worked as a Campaign Coordinator, I was seeking a position within a nonprofit role that would afford me the opportunity to expand my fundraising skills.

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I was raised in a household surrounded with pets. I was fortunate to give and receive love from my dogs, fish, and cats. Currently, I don’t have pets as my condo doesn’t allow them, but I’m grateful to give and receive love from my pets at my family home.

Did you grow up in NYC? If not, when did you move here?

I didn’t grow up in NYC and I still don’t live in NYC. Rather, I live in New Jersey. My philosophy is that real New Yorkers live in New Jersey and commute to NYC.

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living here?

Although I don’t live in New York City, I love working in and visiting the city. Although I’m fortunate enough to have lived in numerous major cities in the world, none of them are as magical as New York City. I love how New York City is the city that never sleeps. There’s always something to do and see in the city. That’s amazing and magical.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

I love crocheting, reading mystery novels, and listening to True Crime podcasts. When I was in high school, I used to make and sell crochet scarves to my fellow classmates and teachers.

Tell us a bit about your life outside of PAWS NY. Where are you in school and what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I’m currently a college student at Buffalo State College, who is trying to figure out what my hobbies and interests are! Fortunately PAWS has become one of my hobbies. Working with animals, and even helping animals in general, really interests me. Some other hobbies that I’m interested in are going out for movies or just going out for dinner.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

While in Buffalo, NY, I had the opportunity to adopt my furry friend, who is more like my daughter! Her name is Couture, also known as Quarter, Guitar, and Pookie. She is a one-year-old Pitbull who enjoys her puppy cups and is very sweet. Couture also looks like an Oreo because of all the spots she has. She also gets confused with the Target mascot dog and a Dalmatian.

Why were you interested in getting involved with PAWS NY?

PAWS NY caught my eye because I just recently adopted my furry friend. Lately, I’ve been more interested in animals and how they are treated. PAWS NY was a great place to start off my journey about working with animals, and being able to help others makes it even better in the process.

What are your goals? What would you like to do in the next 3, 5, 10 years?

My goal in 3 years is to finally finish college, if not continue on that journey. In 5 years, I should be starting my career and looking for a job that interests me. In 10 years, I’d like to be starting my family, and my career should be set. Or if I’m still looking into that, I just want to make sure I’m set in life and trying new things.

What’s your favorite part about living in NYC?

My favorite part about living in NYC is the transportation and how you can get everywhere! While living in Buffalo for some time, transportation was very difficult for me because you need a car to travel anywhere. But in the city, you have plenty of options such as the bus or subway to get wherever you need to go!

Where were you working and what were you doing before joining PAWS NY?

Before joining PAWS NY, I held a temporary position as a Community Outreach Worker at a non-profit organization in the South Bronx that offers social services to the Mexican and other Latino communities in New York City. I was offered this position as part of a contract with NYC’s Department of Health after working at two vaccination sites in the Bronx in early 2021. I am proud to say that I was working in the frontlines of NYC’s vaccination program, spreading awareness and increasing accessibility in one of the most underserved neighborhoods in NYC.

What about this position and organization attracted you?

After having served my community for almost a year, I knew I wanted to continue a professional career in human services. When I came across PAWS NY and the Bilingual Program Manager position, I honestly thought, “Wow! This is THE perfect role for me!” I am a firm believer of the human-animal bond because I live it every day with my dog, and I am a strong advocate for accessibility, so seeing an organization with a mission and vision that combines my professional and personal passions, is what truly excited me about joining PAWS NY!

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I had a few pets throughout my childhood. My very first pet was a cat and then I had fish, hamsters, birds, and dogs. I grew up loving and respecting animals, but it wasn’t until adulthood, with my current dog, Canelo, that I truly learned about the responsibility of caring for a pet. Canelo is an 80-lb Standard Goldendoodle and is a total sweetheart! He is making me a better person every single day. In learning to care for him, I’ve learned to better take care of myself, and the life lessons he is teaching me are invaluable. I love his company and enjoy our long walks and runs together!

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4394" class="wp-image-4394" src="https://i0.wp.com/pawsny.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/IMG-4952.jpg?resize=450%2C335&ssl=1" alt="A large dog, a Goldendoodle, fills the frame with his face, with a black nose and pink tongue sticking out.
Did you grow up in NYC? If not, when did you move here?

Yes, I was born and raised in East Harlem!

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living here?

I love the diversity of the city! I love learning about different cultures and people. I also love trying new foods and finding new things to do and see, and there’s always something new to do and try in the city!

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

I love keeping my body active and in motion, so my top two hobbies are running and dancing. I have a deep love and admiration for my Mexican roots and I fell in love with Mexican Folk Dance as a child. I currently take dance classes and perform in community events and share the beauty of Mexican Folk Dance throughout NYC.

Anything else you want to share with the PAWS community?

It is a true honor to be a part of this community and I will always do my best to help in any way possible! I am looking forward to learning from and growing with everyone who is a part of this amazing community!

We have a special Staff Shoutout today, because PAWS NY recently hired its first Development Manager: Antonio! In this brand new role, Antonio will be focusing on fundraising for PAWS, including managing our Spring Benefit and other fundraising events.

Antonio with his cat, Ivy

“We are so thrilled to have recently welcomed Antonio to our team!” said PAWS NY Founder and Executive Director Rachel Herman. “He has only been with us for a month, but he jumped right in and is already making an impact. Antonio is a smart and thoughtful fundraiser, and despite the challenges we are all facing due to the pandemic, I am confident that he will succeed in raising the money we need to take PAWS NY to the next level!”

Antonio lives in Queens with his cat Ivy and has spent the quarantine focusing on self-care and meditation. Learn more about Antonio in the Q&A below and welcome him to the team!

Where were you working and what were you doing before joining PAWS NY? What about this position and organization attracted you?

I was working at Tricycle Magazine as their Development Manager. What attracted me to this organization was the unique mission that PAWS NY has, which is being able to maintain the human-animal bond that is so valuable, especially during these uncertain times. This new position is exciting because I am able to meet new people daily and see how my work impacts the clients directly.

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I have had all kinds of pets growing up. I started off with goldfish, then hamsters, and then a family dog. As an adult, I adopted my current Siamese cat named Ivy in 2018. Ivy is the princess and gatekeeper of my apartment. She loves to play with her favorite mouse toy, stare out the window to people watch, and nap on the couch. Did I mention she always wants to be included in the conversation? She is very conversational!

Antonio’s cat Ivy

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

My favorite thing about New York City is that everything is so accessible, from culture to art. We have great museums and parks. One of my other favorite things about living in NYC is being able to try new restaurants with my friends.

How are you spending your time in quarantine? Are you learning or trying something new?

Quarantine has been very productive for me. I have been reading a lot and practicing self-care, and I have been trying to get into daily meditation lately.

Anything else you want to share with the PAWS community?

I am excited to work at such a great organization and have the ability to change the lives of pets and humans in the NYC area. I am looking forward to connecting with the PAWS community and raising funds for our programs.

Welcome to the team, Antonio! We’re so excited to have you and can’t wait to work together on some awesome fundraising projects down the road!

Big thanks to Rachel for her awesome ideas and having the drive and community-mindedness to make them happen!”

“It’s so inspiring to see someone who not only started a nonprofit on their own in a place like NYC, but has also grown the organization to be impactful and sustainable the way Rachel has,” said Program Manager Cristina. “Only someone who genuinely cares about what they’re doing can achieve something like that!”

“Rachel’s hard work and dedication is remarkable, and she has put so much into PAWS,” said Community Outreach Manager Kimberly. “Plus, she has been so welcoming and kind as I started this new job. I know I will learn so much from her through this experience.”

Learn more about Rachel’s favorite PAWS moments over the years, the pets in her life, and what quarantine is like with two daughters under the age of 5! You’re a rockstar Rachel – thank you!

PAWS NY celebrated 10 years in November. How does that feel for you as the founder? What are you most proud of?

It’s honestly all so surreal. The last ten years feel like they have flown by, and at the same time I can’t remember what life was like before PAWS. This organization gives me so much meaning, and I am proud of so much. I am most proud of the incredible community of people that makes our work possible. Our amazing staff and volunteers keep everything going day in and day out, and it’s beautiful to see. I also love hearing of the incredible relationships that form between our volunteers and clients. These are true friendships, and I am proud that our organization makes them possible.

What is a recent highlight or Success Story? Tell us about a time you were proud of your work or something made you happy at work.

A recent highlight is when we had the honor of ringing the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange around the time we celebrated our 10 year anniversary. I still can’t believe we were invited to do this! During the countdown, I remember looking down at everyone and thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe PAWS has achieved so much.” It was overwhelming, and I was happy to share that moment with several board members, staff, and volunteers who have been instrumental in our success.

I also have been proud of our response to COVID-19. We are a small team, and when we made the decision to temporarily suspend our Housecall Program in March, it was obviously difficult on everyone. Our team called all 100+ of our active clients to give them the news that we had to halt our volunteer visits. In our ten-year history, the pandemic and this moment in particular has been the most difficult thing we have had to face. I am proud of how our team has pulled together, made the difficult calls, and quickly pivoted our services to focus on our Pet Pantry and Foster and Emergency Program, all while working from home and under significant stress. This speaks to the connection our staff has to our mission and how committed every member of the team is to helping our clients and their pets.

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I currently have two senior cats, Wylee and Milo. Wylee is 16, and I adopted him from the ASPCA in 2004. He’s skittish and shy. Wylee is really attached to me, and he’ll hide when I’m not around. He’s currently dealing with kidney disease, and we have to give him subq fluids every other day, which is definitely a challenge.

Milo is 12, and PAWS is the reason he came into my life. It was November 2008, and I had just started to build the organization. My husband was with me, and we had just met with a woman in Brooklyn who needed assistance. On our way to the subway, an adorable kitten came out from behind a fence, limping and with a crooked tail. He meowed at us. I couldn’t leave the little guy there, so we took a box from a nearby bodega and put the kitten inside. We took him to the vet, and then brought him home with the goal of finding him a new home. He was just too sweet to give up, so he’s been with us ever since.

In addition to my two guys, I also had a lot of pets growing up. Let’s see if I can name them all (in order): Oliver (dog), Igor (dog), Sheba (cat), Freddie (cat), Henry (dog), Daisy (dog), Olivia (dog), Mookie (cat), Opus (cat), Felix (cat), Kiva (dog), and Nermal (cat). I also had a few hamsters at some point!

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

I love that I can walk outside and find whatever I need or want. It’s a simple thing, but I love the freedom that comes with that. I also love to eat, and I feel lucky to live in a place where I can access such great food.

How are you spending your time in quarantine? Are you learning or trying something new?

Honestly, quarantine has been a real challenge for me! I have two young kids (a 4-year-old who just finished Pre-K and a 1-year-old). Balancing work, parenting, and remote learning for my older daughter has been hard and doesn’t leave much time for anything else! I love to bake, so I’ve done a little bit of that when I can (bread, bagels, cakes, etc.). I’m trying to keep everything in perspective and appreciate that I get this extra time with my family.

Anything else you want to share with the PAWS community?

I just want to say “Thank You!” This community is amazing, and I’m so inspired by the people who make our work possible. We wouldn’t be here without you, and I’m excited for the next decade!

Thank you all for getting to know our staff via this Staff Shoutout series! We hope to hang out in real life again sometime soon!

“Kimberly is our newest team member, but you’d never know it!” said PAWS NY founder and executive director Rachel Herman. “It was six weeks into her new role that COVID-19 forced us to work from home. Despite the unexpected change so soon after her arrival, Kimberly has truly thrived. I am so impressed with all she does. She is organized and knowledgeable, and she is excellent at managing the organization’s communications. We love having Kimberly on the team!”

Working from home in Brooklyn, Kimberly also worked with Rachel on the Spring Fundraising Campaign, which raised more than $33,000 for PAWS NY!
What is a recent highlight or Success Story? Tell us about a time you were proud of your work or something made you happy at work.

The past five months have been quite an adventure, and I’m especially proud of the work I did with Rachel as we shifted the PAWS NY Annual Spring Benefit to an online fundraising campaign. It was a marketing and communications challenge, and yet our community stood up and supported us in amazing ways! I’m so thrilled with how the overall campaign turned out, and I can’t wait to do it all again (in person, hopefully!) for 2021!

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

Growing up in Ohio, my family always had pets, including dogs, cats, a hamster, and a frog. When I moved to New York, it only took me a few months to get my first adult pet: an orange tabby kitten named Jarvis. He was joined by Franklin, a brown & grey striped kitten, five years later. Sadly, Jarvis passed away last September at the age of 14, but Franklin continues to enjoy life in Brooklyn, including napping in seemingly-uncomfortable positions, scratching chairs, and playing with ribbons.

Kimberly with Franklin, who is thrilled to be a part of the photo shoot.

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

I always wanted to live in New York City, and 16 years after moving here, I still love it. Walking the Coney Island Boardwalk and exploring Red Hook. Watching Broadway shows and laying in the grass at Philharmonic in the Park. Hanging out with friends at some show or Celebrate Brooklyn! concert, and eating late-night pizza. But right now, without these touchpoints, I have been re-discovering the underlying vibe that’s always there, no matter what challenges are thrown at the city. New Yorkers are all about community and togetherness and grit—and that’s what I love the most!

How are you spending your time in quarantine? Are you learning or trying something new?

My husband Michael and I are cooking and baking a lot during this time, and we have gone on a few Netflix binges. I’ve also planted some flowers and herbs up on our roof, though I am still working on my own green thumb. I also started taking American Sign Language (ASL) classes online once a week, which have been really great!

Anything else you want to share with the PAWS community?

Thanks to everyone who has so warmly welcomed me to the PAWS NY team! I am so thrilled to be here and working to help New Yorkers and their pets during this time and beyond!

We hope you’re enjoying our Staff Shoutout series and getting to know the PAWS NY team!

Let’s hear it for Cristina, who is next up in our Staff Shoutout series! As Program Manager, Cristina recently passed her first anniversary at PAWS NY, having started in her position in March 2019. During the quarantine period, Cristina regularly connects with our PAWS clients, helping coordinate pet food deliveries and emergency vet care, and managing several foster care and re-homing situations during this time.

Off on adventures

“Not only is Cristina’s positive attitude contagious, but she brings an enormous amount of compassion and dedication to her work,” said PAWS NY Executive Director Rachel Herman. “She is also our resident recycle expert, ensuring that everyone on our team is doing their very best to protect our planet. Cristina is truly a joy to work with, and I look forward to seeing her every day once we can return safely to the office!”

When she’s not helping PAWS clients and volunteers, Cristina is exploring Brooklyn and tending to her new backyard garden. Thanks so much for all your hard work Cristina! Check out her Staff Shoutout Q&A below for more!

What is a recent highlight or Success Story?

We recently had a client pass away and I was working on rehoming her beloved dog, who was living with a foster at the time. There were many barriers to getting in touch with the client’s family, but we made it a point to connect with someone before moving forward with any type of adoption process. Thankfully, I was able to get in touch with her sister after countless calls and it turns out she had been so worried not knowing where the sweet little pup was. She took her sister’s dog into her own family, which included one of the pup’s littermates. It was so sweet to help keep the family together (and reunite a brother and sister)!

Tell us about your pets, past & present.

I’ve always needed to have at least one pet! Throughout my childhood, I had a Husky, a German Shepherd, a cat, fish and frogs, two parakeets, and then a terrier mix named Lucky. He was my best friend for years and lived a wonderful, long life. Three years ago I rescued a tiny sick kitten off the street and became a full-blown cat mom for the first time. He is a little prince now and has traveled with us throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Cristina with Lucky

What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

My favorite things are the amazing plant-based food options you can find, the activist community, music venues, and hearing different languages being spoken everywhere I go. I’m particularly fond of Brooklyn, where I’ve lived and explored since moving two years ago. My parents were born and raised in the city, I have many relatives here, and I was born in Manhattan so I’ve always been in and out of NYC.

How are you spending your time in quarantine? Are you learning or trying something new?

The best thing that I’ve been doing during quarantine is gardening. I’ve wanted to grow a proper garden for years and started as soon as the season allowed. I am lucky enough to have a backyard and have been growing squash, eggplant, kale, rainbow chard, beans, peppers, pak choy, tomatoes, strawberries, and many different herbs! It’s great to have a productive thing to put my energy towards and even better to harvest the food! I’ve also been biking around Brooklyn every week and cooking yummy veggie meals each day.

Anything else you want to share with the PAWS community?

I am forever grateful to be in touch with so many like-minded people who are trying to make the world a little bit better—from our wonderful volunteers and clients, to the PAWS staff, to all of the other organizations across the city. Everyone offers a different perspective and new experiences, but being a part of how every aspect of our programming works together is pretty incredible to see.

Thanks so much for all your hard work, Cristina! You’re an integral member of the team and we’re glad to give you a Staff Shoutout!

It’s time for another Staff Shoutout! Liz, our Senior Program Manager, started working at PAWS NY in March 2016, and has supported dozens of clients and volunteers during this time. A native New Yorker, Liz loves all animals and regularly visits animal sanctuaries in the area on top of her work caring for PAWS NY clients and pets.

“Liz brings so much commitment and professionalism to her role as Senior Program Manager, and the impact of that can be felt by all of our clients and their pets,” said PAWS NY Executive Director Rachel Herman. “Even during the current pandemic, she has continued to make such a positive difference in the lives of those we serve. We are so lucky to have Liz as a part of our team!”

During this time, Liz stays busy by regularly connecting with clients, coordinating foster care and emergency vet services as needed, and leading our Virtual Volunteer Orientations online! Learn more about Liz’s work, and what she’s doing while in quarantine, by reading her Staff Shoutout Q&A below!

1. What is a recent highlight from working at PAWS NY?

One of my favorite recent stories was when one of our volunteers asked me if she could mail her client her iPad so that they could FaceTime during the lockdown. This client has told me many times how grateful he is for the relationship he and his dog have developed with her. These strange and difficult times seem to be highlighting how important our connections are and I consider it a success every time a client and volunteer make a real, lasting connection like that.

2. Tell us about your pets, past & present!

I am the lone animal-lover of my family, so I had to beg and plead for all my pets! I had gerbils, lizards, hermit crabs, and plenty of imaginary pets before finally convincing my parents to let me get my dog, Mimi. She was the sweetest, chillest dog and everyone loved her. My husband and I have been waiting for the right time to adopt a dog and are getting pretty close! In the meantime we visit animal sanctuaries (pigs are my second favorite animal) and dog sit for friends as often as possible.

3. What is your favorite thing (or things) about living in NYC?

I have a soft spot for Williamsburg, where my dad’s family is from and where my grandma still lives. Every summer there is the Giglio Feast, which is a tradition carried over from the town my ancestors are from in Italy. I love having a direct connection with my roots. The cultural diversity in Queens, where I live now, is awesome and is one of my favorite parts about NYC in general.

4. How are you spending your time in quarantine? Are you learning or trying something new?

I’ve been spending a lot of time cooking, searching the black market for yeast (lol), and trading recipes. I’m also having fun decorating handmade cards with watercolors and sending them to friends and family.
